A Brief History of Folk Rock
Folk Rock was originated in the 1960s when artists like Bob Dylan & the Band, and the Byrds start to respond to the British Invasion of creative rock bands like The Who and The Beatles, using their folk influences. These young intellectuals had grown up influenced by the folksingers of the 1930s and ‘40s like Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly.
Influence on Society
Like the 1950s Beat Generation before them, the vast majority of the urban folk revivalists shared a disdain for the values of mainstream American mass culture. This rejection of traditional values and the attendant politicization it often bred, along with fervent support for the civil rights movement, led many folk singers to begin composing their own "protest" material.
