Then studied guitar and music theory at El Conservatorio Nacional de Música de Santo Domingo, He decided to go abroad and study in Berklee College of Music in Boston. He graduated in 1982 with a diploma in jazz composition. He returned to Dominican Republic, and released his first album, "Soplando"(1984) with a group of local musicians, they had a group called Cuatro cuarenta. The group members were Maridalia Hernández, Roger Zayas-Bazán, and Mariela Mercado. Juan Luis Guerra signed with Karen Records. he was focus at first with merengue but then he released his album, Bachata Rosa, in 1990. This album made him earn his first Grammy award.
