A Brief History of Spanish Rap

Spanish rap began in 1979. It is inspired by the hip-hop styles on the United States but has also influences from ‘flamenco’ and has good relations with reggae.

It uses Spanish as the main language but it usually incorporates English slang words.

Influence on Society

The rap scene is not strong in Spain (mainly because of the lack of a strong black community and the lack of the hip-hop underground movement).

This is why people thoughts are not as influented by hip-hop as they are in other countries such as the United States and France.

However, they have had influenced the way people dress and the way the people express themselves. For example the word ‘nigga’ that in hip-hop is used to refer to a person that is your mate or good friend, is also used in Spain with that same meaning.
