A brief history of Spanish rap
Spanish rap began in 1979. It is inspired by the hip-hop styles on the United States but has also influences from ‘flamenco’ and has good relations with reggae.
It uses Spanish as the main language but it usually incorporates English slang words.
‘La familia’ was the first Spanish rap group. It was formed by Don Juan, Lou Rock, Robski and El Indio and their lyrics mixed English and Spanish.
In 1989 the most important label in Spain at that time ‘Ariola’ wanted to give some importance to hip-hop so they started to hire more hip-hop singers such as DJ Jonco.
They were not very successful but they helped to establish hip-hop in Madrid.
In the 1990s, hip-hop began to expand from Madrid to cities like Barcelona, Valencia, Zaragoza, Malaga and Seville.
