Carlos Gardel was not only a tango singer but an actor and a songwriter as well. It is not clear whether he was born in Uruguay or in France. He was the main representative of the history of tango. His voice has been recorded by the UNESCO in the Memory of the World Programme.
Mercedes Simone, born in Buenos Aires in 1904, was an actress and tango singer. She was nicknamed “La Dama del Tango”. She was also popular in Brasil, Colombia and Cuba.
Anibal Troilo, also called Pichucho, was a tango bandoneoist, song-writer and orchestra conductor. He even created a cuarteto group formed by Ubaldo de Lío, Osvaldo Berlingieri, Rafael del Bagno and Anibal himself.
Astor Piazzolla was considered one of the most important tango composers of the 20th century. He introduced several innovations in the tango regarding the rhythm, the timbre, or the harmony.
Gotan Project (tango the other way around) is a French electronic tango band formed by the Swiss musician Christoph H. Müller, the French DJ Philippe Cohen Solal and the Argentinian musician Eduardo Makaroff. In their first single they combined tango, jazz and electronic music and as a consequence of their success they did several international tours.
Bajofondo is an electronic tango group formed by Argentinian and Uruguayan musicians. They wanted to capture the Argentinian urban traditional music of tango into a more contemporanean format. They have recorded songs for some American telenovelas, for example, “Avenida Brasil” and “La Favorita”.
Palza Francia is another modern tango music project made up by different famous musicians: the French Catherine Ringer and the composers Eduardo Makaroff and Swiss Christoph H. Müller from Gotan Project.
