Influence on society

Hip-hop is criticized because of the content of their lyrics: violence, sex, drugs… but it has also challenged the system and unified a lot of people from totally different social classes (especially young people).

In their lyrics they also send a message usually against the system (the system is normally represented by the police). They teld in their songs compelling stories about the life in ‘the hood’, stories about drugs, violence, crime…

Hip-hop culture has always tried to unify different populations.

It was created by black young people in the streets of the Bronx but nowadays 75% of the population who listens to hip-hop is nonblack.

But they have also tried to send positive messages. They want poor people to rebel against the system and to realize the amount of power they actually have in their hands and they have also sent messages against racism, sexism and discrimination.
