Influence on society
Rude Boy was a term that referred to juvenile delinquents and criminals in Jamaica in the 60s, but during the 2 Tone Ska Revival (70s) it started to be used as the name of the fanbase of the genre. Rude Boys dressed like gangsters, wearing sharp suits, thin ties and Trilby hats. Music (Ska) and street violence combined and created the ‘Rude Boy lifestyle’, which led to Jamaica’s gang-violence. The Rude Boy attitude, it music, fashion and gang mentality, would strongly influence the skinhead subculture.
Ska lyrics are known for being clear, direct and having a really strong political ideology behind. Ska bands are often found defending human rights, as well as social equality and freedom. Ska-punk bands develop this fight and are usually anti-capitalist and have a really open mind. A great example of this would be the Spanish ska-punk band ‘Ska-P’ that has lyrics against capitalism and pro-socialism/pro-anarchism (‘El Vals del Obrero’); defending human and children rights (‘Niño Soldado’); promoting the legalization of marijuana (‘Cannabis’); or denouncing the Church’s hypocrisy towards sex (‘Sexo y Religión’).
