Rock and roll is not just a music genre. It has actually influenced nowadays genres such as pop and rock and everyday life, fashion, films, politics…
When it was created, people thought it was a passing fad. However, by the mid-1960s, it earned the respect as a legitimate art form.
In the 1960s it was completely separated from its roots (blues, gospel, country…) and in the 1970s it completely dominated the music industry.
It has influenced the creation of almost every type of rock music (heavy metal, classic rock, grunge, alternative…) but it has also helped the music industry develop, allowing different music producing companies emerge and promoting artists that are still appreciated.
It has also influenced the culture. It developed in an era of the development of freedom (helping it to improve) and in an era of conflicts between black and white people. Some people say that, without Little Richard, the social scene between blacks and whites would never have merged.
Finally, it has also influenced the pop culture that we know today (most notably in the 1950s and 1960s).
Rock and roll dominated not only America but the whole world. Therefore, it reached Great Britain where it became especially popular. British transformed rock and roll into something of their own and then brought it back to America (known as the ‘British invasion’) with artists such as Rolling Stones and The Beatles.

Fashion
Elvis Presley was the greatest rock and roll icon and his look was as popular as his sound. He made popular wide-shouldered jackets, loose, lightweight slacks, his ducktail, sideburns and mock-surliness.
Teenage boys wore tight-fitting blue jeans and white T-shirts imitating the ‘Grease’ style.
