A brief history of American rap

Rap is talking in rhyme to the rhythm of a beat.

It all started in the early 1970s in the South Bronx:

Some teenagers with little money but a lot of imagination started to extract rhythms and melodies from existing songs and started to mix them up with a new type of poetry that showed the life in the ‘hood’, giving birth to what was known as hip-hop. These kids refused to be silenced by poverty and in their lyrics they showed enormous passion and truth.

It then migrated to Los Angeles, where a West Coast hip-hop scene developed. Later, it spread to Europe, Asia and Africa gaining more and more cultural importance becoming nowadays one of the most successful musical form.

There were around 10 pioneers : Pete DJ Jones, Kool DJ Herc, Eddie Cheeba, ‘Love bug’ Starski, Grand Master Flash, Africa Bambaataa, Kurtis Blow, the Sugarhill Gang and Run DMC. Each individual contribution put together explain the history of rap.
