A brief history of Pop

Título del sitio

Pop music has the basic structure of verse-chorus-verse in a simple, catchy and melodic way.

Before, 'pop music' was not understood as a music genre with clear musical characteristics. Pop music was the 'popular music'. It was understood as the contrary of cultured, classic music.

Under this definition were genres like funky, folk or even jazz.

In time, pop has been earning an aceptation as an independent music genre.

It all started in the late 50s as a derivation of rock and roll (mixed with other genres).

Pop is actually influented by almost every single genre: rock and roll, jazz, soul, hip hop, country, rock...

Pop music has always been dominated by the North-American and British music industry (this has made pop songs from very different countries look exactly the same).

Aim of appealing to a general audience, rather than to a particular sub-culture or ideology,

Emphasis on recording, production, and technology, rather than live performance;

Tendency to reflect existing trends rather than progressive developments.

The song is often between two and a half and three and a half minutes in length, with a rhythmic element, a mainstream style and a simple traditional structure.

The beat and the melodies tend to be simple, with limited harmonic accompaniment.

The lyrics typically focus on simple themes
