A brief history of Merengue

Is a dominican folkloric dance widely spread and considered by many as the dominican national dance.

 

Merengue comes from a cuban music called UPA which  arrived to Santo Domingo in the middle of 19th century from Puerto Rico. Alfonseca was he one who invented merengue. The origins of merengue are foggy, there are very little proven facts.

 

The merengue instruments where chosen because they where the easiest to get to the dominican population. High class did´nt accepted merengue for a long time. But now a days that is what you hear in all the weddings including the high class ones.
