Brief history of cumbia
The Cumbia is the most extended latin music genres among America. It can be found all the way from the Patagonia to the north of Mexico, that’s why it has many subgenres: Argentinian cumbia, Peruvian cumbia, Mexican cumbia… The further south we go, the more popularity the cumbia gains.
While the Spanish colonization took place, singing was the only way for African slaves and Native Americans to express their pain. There is where the origins of cumbia rely on. On the Spanish behalf, they looked down to that music and even said that it was “the music of the devil”.
