A brief history of Classic Rock

‘Classic rock is a radio format and not really considered a musical genre. It's more of a retrospective of rock's greatest hits that span from the 1960s through the last decade. ‘ says Alex Cosper.

Although the transition from "rock and roll" to "rock" clearly happened in the 60s and The Beatles were a huge influence, many classic rock stations think of Led Zeppelin as the band that started rock. These stations have been around since the 1960s or 1970s. Some examples are: KGB in San Diego or KISW in Seattle.

Classic rock’s popularity began in the 60s, when pop artists started making experimental albums that freeform stations played. ‘MetroMedia’ was a company that owned several Freeform stations (KSAN, KMET, WMMS in Cleveland, one of the first cities to play rock n’ roll music). These stations highly influenced public and college radio and helped create what would become the rock format.

In the late 70s, a lot of Freeform stations were taken over by rock radio consultants, whose playlists were tight and became really popular. By the 80s, the format became huge. However, it was overshadowed by the alternative rock format in the 90s.
